Overview of the Australian Education System

Australia is the world's third most popular study destination, home to 43 universities including the elite Group of Eight (Go8) — all globally ranked and fully government-accredited.

Australia's higher education system is regulated by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), which ensures all institutions meet strict quality benchmarks. All university courses are registered under CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) — a legal requirement ensuring international students are protected under Australian consumer law. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) ensures all degrees are nationally consistent and globally recognised. Australia's academic year has two main intakes: February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2), making it flexible for Indian students to plan. The Group of Eight (Go8) — comprising Melbourne, ANU, Sydney, UNSW, Queensland, Monash, Adelaide, and Western Australia — are Australia's elite research-intensive universities, comparable to the UK's Russell Group and the US Ivy League. English is the sole medium of instruction across all institutions.

Australia Student Visa Process

All international students studying in Australia require a Student Visa (Subclass 500). Applications are submitted online through the Department of Home Affairs (ImmiAccount).

💡

Visa Fee Update from 1 July 2025

Australia's Student Visa (Subclass 500) fee has increased to AUD 2,000 (~₹1,11,956) from 1 July 2025 — a significant increase from the earlier AUD 710. Apply early and plan your budget accordingly.

1

Receive Offer Letter (CoE)

Apply to your chosen CRICOS-registered Australian university and receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the primary document required for your visa application.

2

Purchase OSHC Health Insurance

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for all international students in Australia. Purchase from an approved provider (Medibank, BUPA, NIB, AHM) before submitting your visa.

5

Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

Australia requires all student visa applicants to satisfy the Genuine Student (GS) requirement — demonstrating that your primary intention is to study, not migrate. SOP plays a critical role here.

World-Class Cities

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide consistently rank among the world's most liveable cities. Each offers a unique blend of culture, opportunity, and lifestyle — with world-class public services.
