What is TOEFL iBT?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) — developed and administered by ETS — is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency exam for university admissions.
TOEFL iBT Major Update — Effective January 21, 2026
The new TOEFL iBT is shorter (~1.5 hours), introduces real-world task-based questions, and now reports scores on a new 1–6 CEFR-aligned band scale alongside the traditional 0–120 scale during the 2026–2028 transition period. The test is also fully adaptive — adjusting question difficulty based on your responses.
Understanding TOEFL iBT
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is developed and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), USA. It is the #1 English test for study in North America — accepted by all top US, Canadian, Australian, UK, European, and Asian universities. Over 3.5 million people take TOEFL each year worldwide.
TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) measures academic English proficiency across four integrated skills — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Unlike IELTS, the Speaking section is computer-recorded (no face-to-face examiner), and tasks are often integrated — combining reading, listening, and speaking/writing in a single question.
Reading
⏱ ~30 mins · 50 questionsAcademic passages + daily reading texts. Tasks: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage.
Listening
⏱ ~29 mins · 47 questionsConversations, announcements & academic talks. Listen and Choose a Response · Listen to a Conversation & Announcement.
Writing
⏱ ~23 mins · 12 tasksBuild a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion (integrated reading + listening + writing).
Speaking
⏱ ~8 mins · 11 tasksListen and Repeat + Take an Interview. Fully computer-recorded — no live examiner. Evaluated by AI + human raters.
What Changed in TOEFL 2026?
Shorter Test Duration
Reduced from ~2 hours to ~1.5 hours — fewer but more meaningful tasks per section.
New 1–6 CEFR Band Scale
Scores now reported on 1–6 scale (alongside 0–120 during transition). Overall score = average of all four sections.
Adaptive Test Format
Questions now adapt in difficulty based on your responses — similar to GRE adaptive testing.
Real-World Task Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the new TOEFL iBT 2026 format, scoring, and registration.
Q1 What is the new TOEFL iBT format in 2026?
From January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT is shorter (~1.5 hours), fully adaptive, and features real-world task-based questions. It now reports scores on a 1–6 CEFR-aligned band scale alongside the traditional 0–120 scale during a 2-year transition period.
Q2 Is TOEFL accepted in India for US universities?
Yes — TOEFL is the most preferred English test for US university admissions. All Ivy League universities, MIT, Stanford, and 12,000+ institutions worldwide accept TOEFL iBT scores. Many US universities do not accept IELTS for visa purposes, making TOEFL the stronger choice.
Q3 What is the TOEFL exam fee in India in 2026?
The TOEFL iBT standard fee in India is ₹16,900 for both Test Centre and Home Edition formats. TOEFL Essential is available at approximately ₹10,000. Late registration within 7 days of the test incurs an additional ₹3,320 fee.
Q4 How many times can I take the TOEFL?
You can take TOEFL iBT once every 3 days, and up to 5 times in a 12-month period. Unlike IELTS, TOEFL does not offer a One Skill Retake — you must retake the complete test if you wish to improve any section.
Q5 Can I take TOEFL from home?
Yes — TOEFL iBT Home Edition allows you to take the same test from your home with an online proctor. It requires a webcam, microphone, reliable internet, and a private, quiet room. The score is identical to the test centre version.
Q6 How long are TOEFL scores valid?
TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, scores are no longer reportable to institutions. Plan your test date to ensure your scores remain valid until your university application and visa processing are complete.
