Overview of the New Zealand Education System

New Zealand offers a high-quality, globally recognised education system with 8 government-funded universities, all ranked in the world's top 3% of universities.

New Zealand's education system is regulated by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), which ensures all degrees meet strict quality standards. The system is based on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF), offering consistent, internationally recognised credentials from certificate level through to doctoral programmes. All 8 universities in New Zealand are publicly funded and appear in world university rankings. Teaching is research-led, practical, and highly interactive — students are encouraged to think independently and engage in industry projects and fieldwork. The academic year runs from February to November, with two semesters. English is the sole language of instruction.
