Overview of the German Education System
Germany is the world's top destination for affordable, high-quality education — offering tuition-free degrees at public universities that rank among the world's best.
Germany's higher education system is regulated by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and the German Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat). Most public universities charge no tuition fees — only a nominal semester contribution of €150–€350 (approx. ₹14,000–₹32,000) per semester that includes a public transport pass. Germany has two main types of higher education institutions: Universität (research universities) and Fachhochschule / University of Applied Sciences (HAW) — the latter being highly industry-focused and practical. The Bologna Process means German degrees (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD) are fully compatible with all European and globally recognised qualifications. The academic year follows two semesters: Winter Semester (October–March) and Summer Semester (April–September). Most undergraduate programmes are taught in German; however, over 1,500 Master's and PhD programmes are available fully in English — making Germany one of the top English PG destinations in non-English-speaking Europe. Indian students must obtain an APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) certificate before applying.
